Symposium: Recent Research with Lalsingh Harribance
A Comparison of Clairvoyance and Telepathy

Judith Klein, Psychical Research Foundation

The procedure in this series was similar to that described in the first symposium paper (W.G. Roll, "Physical Aspects of the Target"). Two new target decks of 10 male and female cards were used. One deck was numbered 1-10 on the face side. The second deck was lettered on the reverse side from A to K, excluding F. The two experimenters were not aware at any time which letters stood for males and which for females. At the start of each session, L.H. was locked in his room by Muriel Roll (M.R.) and asked to sit in his chair. M.R. would then be seated in the adjoining room. I arrived later and obtained the testing materials from a locked container in another office. I then proceeded to the room adjoining L.H.’s, closed the door behind me, and prepared the targets.

Ten runs of 10 trials each were done in each session, two sessions a day for five days, for a total of 100 runs (1000 trials). The target orders for the 10 runs in each session were provided by a random sequence obtained by a third party not present. I arranged the cards according to the random order and then signaled M.R. who in turn signaled L.H. to begin. L.H. wrote his calls on a standard record sheet. Target orders composed of numbers represented "telepathy" runs, since I would be looking at the fronts of the cards as I placed them. Target orders composed with letters would be "clairvoyance" runs, since I did not see the fronts of the cards. The order of telepathy and clairvoyance runs was alternated throughout the session, and from day to day: a run of one kind followed a run of the other in regular sequence.

Once M.R. had signaled L.H. to respond, she assisted me in a double recording of the target order, returning to her chair when this was finished. L.H. was not aware at any time during the experiment that the target orders were determined by a random order prearranged by a third party, or that there was both a telepathy and a clairvoyance procedure. At the end of the session I left the building while L.H. was still locked in his room, taking with me all testing materials. The cards and target slips were given to W.G. Roll to be kept locked up until the next session, and I kept the score sheets locked in my file cabinet.

The overall results for the 1000 trials showed a positive deviation of +51 (CR = 3.17; P<.005). The 500 clairvoyance trials had a nonsignificant deviation of –3 and the 500 telepathy trials a significant deviation of +54 (CR = 4.82; P<10-5). Despite the fact that L.H. had scored very well previously under clairvoyance conditions, he showed a marked preference for telepathy when it was paired with clairvoyance. Such a preferential response was apparently mediated by psi.
